New requirements when traveling to the United Kingdom

04.03.2025

From 2 April 2025, Swiss and French citizens (including children and infants) who currently do not need a visa for short stays will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to travel to the United Kingdom.

Travelers do not need an ETA if they:
  • hold a British visa;
  • have authorization to live, work, or study in the United Kingdom (including permanent residency or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme);
  • are British or Irish citizens (they must prove their travel authorization using their British passport, Irish passport, or Swiss passport containing an eligibility certificate);
  • are citizens of the British Overseas Territories (BOTC) and are traveling with their BOTC passport;
  • reside in Ireland and travel from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.
The ETA costs 10 £ (approximately 11 CHF / 12 euros) and is valid for up to two years, or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first.

Travelers will be able to start applying for an ETA from 5 March 2025 for enforcement starting on 2 April 2025. Decisions are usually made within three working days, although most people receive a decision more quickly.

Passengers in transit through the United Kingdom are also required to apply for an ETA.

Travelers are strongly advised to stay informed about updates to entry requirements for the United Kingdom and to plan their trips accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.
