Rovaniemi, Finland
How about meeting Santa Claus in his village? Yes, Santa Claus resides in Rovaniemi, at the far north of Lapland! The Arctic Circle line even passes through the village, where you can get a certificate!
The destination is ideal for observing the region’s emblematic animal: the reindeer! Did you know that there are more than 220,000 reindeer in Lapland compared to 180,000 inhabitants? Most herds belong to the Sami, the last indigenous people spread across the different countries of Lapland.
For activities, Rovaniemi is an excellent base for a stay in Lapland. There is something for everyone: snowshoeing, dog sledding, snowmobile excursions, and, of course, Northern Lights hunting nights. You can also ski down the slopes through the mystical landscapes of Lapland, even at night! Don’t forget ice skating on frozen lakes! The bravest can try ice swimming, followed by a comforting sauna.
The city is lively and offers all the entertainment needed for young and old: bars, restaurants, playgrounds, museums… Don’t miss the Arktikum Museum and Science Center, both for its architecture and to learn about the city’s history and life and environment in the Arctic region through various exhibitions.
For architecture enthusiasts, the city is full of architectural gems, including the municipal library, the town hall, and the Lappia House (theater and conference center). These buildings are the work of the famous architect and designer Alvar Aalto, who was entrusted with the city’s urban planning after the Lapland War in 1944.
Moreover, the city attracts experts and design enthusiasts every year during the Arctic Design Week.
